History Of The Old Sugar Loaf:

The Sugar Loaf was built in 1717 as a luxury hotel following an increase in travel and tourism and soon become a known favourite of the nobility and gentry travelling on the wailing street coaching route.
Business at the Sugar Loaf was at its peak during the coaching era when the demand for good food, accommodation and staying facilities was at its highest.
Many famous people have visited The Sugar Loaf. According to Daniel Defoe, Moll Flanders stayed here in 1750, although no-one can confirm this. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the hotel in 1841. Other visitors have included the Marquis of Waterford and Lord Byron and in April 1976 a lion stayed here while travelling from Edinburgh Zoo to Longleat in Wiltshire.
